Hand ground on Wheels

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 8, 2012, 6:12 AM
Facebook l Gallery l dA Portfolio l Watch Me l Note Me

Been working with Larry Detloff of Santa Cruz, California since the turn of the century.
He's been hand-making custom folding knives since the mid 70s and offered to teach me his techniques.
I'm not a blacksmith.  Lately I've been working with Damascus Steel folded by Master Blacksmith, Mike Norris [link]
I get damascus billets from which I cut my parts.  The folders I make are lock-backs whose blades and mechanical elements are ground freehand on stone wheels.

Current projects are keeping me busy so I'm unable to accept commissions right now.

Thanks for visiting,

Thanks for taking a look at my work, I'm very happy that you like it. I do sell sell knives, but they take a lot of time so only a couple a year or so. Keep an eye on out here on dA, I'll post when the next one is completed.

Thanks again

No Problem! Your knives are legitimately the most incredible knives I have ever seen. They have actually inspired me to make a handle from a Damascus blank post heat treating. I will lose a lot of creativity that way but I don't think I have the means to carve from a billet and heat treat. Any input on what to look for in a blank? I would like to spend less than 100$ but I know that is cheap.....

That sounds like a great project!
I don't know a lot about what kind of prices one can expect for blades without handles, but I think I recall seeing something along those lines in a K&G catalogue a little time back.
When I'm in the market for a billet I start with a smith and then look at patterns. I've been really happy with steel folded by Mike Norris and Devin Thomas. Y'know, Logan Pearce is an incredible blacksmith and he's on deviantArt, I bet he'd have Solid input for you along these lines. Maybe even be open to forging something for you. Worth a shot.

Good luck & have fun!

I just came into a kiln though, what temperature and temp and technique is required to heat treat if you don't mind me asking?

Nice, You got a kiln!
Heat treat will vary a bit depending on the steel you're working with, if you pick up a billet you can ask the smith for their suggestions for heat treat and they can break it down for you.

Last one I did was like this:
When had the parts ground into the shapes I needed they all went into a closed metal envelope. Kiln was brought up to about 1950 F, then opened and the envelope goes in (propped up to balance on edge so the blade's not laying on it's side). kiln temp will drop so let it come back up to 1900 F and hold it there letting the parts soak for about 7 minutes. Then pull them out and using tongs, dip the blade into oil while it's still glowing red hot.
and the parts came out file-hard.
This works great, but again, I'm not a blacksmith so someone with a stronger metallurgic background could surely afford you more insight if you need it.

Have fun with your kiln, Dude!
I've heard of a fella who put a stack of quarters into his kiln and heated them up to their fusing temperature and beat 'em till they folded together, made his own Mokume that way. Beautiful stuff.

Thanks so much man. Sorry I am bugging you with all of these details I am just really interested in getting started and don't want to embark on some big project without working out the details first. Larry Pearce is a great maker and he has some awesome tutorials that will help immensely. Also all of your advice is amazingly helpful and it is refreshing to have someone be so in depth and helpful with an art. I will certainly ask the smith regarding specific instructions and I like your kiln idea. I have a pottery kiln so I will have to see if it gets to that temperature.
I guess I have one more annoying question for you though. What on earth is a metal envelope? Is it exactly what it sounds like and for prevention of scaling? If so how/where do I get one, and if I need to do something to prevent scaling, how do I? I guess that was multiple....

Thanks again so much man, if you ever need some help with something or are going to start selling your knives let me know. I show them to everyone.

Hey guys!!!! I REALLY need to warn you about something!
there is a hacker named 'life owner' and he now has a Da account!
one of my friends friends got hacked by him so I know it's real! And you need to be SUPER careful! You need to tell EVERYONE on ur list because if any of ur friends adds him he will pop on ur list too!
If you have ANY internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on and a seemingly harmless eMail appears titled "Mail Server Report" and if you open either file a message will apper that says:'It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'
and then you lose (litterally) EVERYTHING in ur PC
and then the person will gain acsess to ur name, e-mail AND password
This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it .

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself 'life owner'..
(p.s. I promise this is not spam, I litterally typed the whole thing out and I'm sending it to everyone on my watching list and then I'm gunna post it as a journal)
