Hope so. Abalone shell's sort of a bear to work with. I'm working from raw shells so getting a piece big enough is a challenge. Think I'll probably have to tile-together a couple to cover the space.
Thanks for your input, Hope your day's running smooth!
Agreed. The thing about Abalone is that since the shell is a big curve, it can be tricky to get a flat piece out of it big enough. This knife's size increases the problem. Yeah, we'll do the cobbling-together-multiple-small-pieces thing. ^_^
well, I've seen your other piece of work, including your drawings. I think you could definitely use the problems of having to use smaller pieces to your advantage.
If I remember right you can rotate and arrange abalone so that it reflects differently than it's nighbor. and has slightly different tints and hues...maybe you could use that to create a pattern to compliment the shape of the knife.
Just random thoughts bouncing around in my head. if I get to be a pain in the butt let me know.
Haha, Nah, Dude, your ideas are good. I've started just chopping out little cool looking pieces instead of going for one big piece. It's kind of nice actually because it frees me up to pick and choose the neatest colors and patterns instead of being forced to go with whatever the biggest piece looks like. Surprise Benefit!
Thanks! Heat-treated to harden the steel, then just a bunch of aesthetic stuff like filework and bolsters & scale for the handle. Shouldn't be too long. ^_^ Can't wait to see more of your characters. I'm a sucker for your armor!
so I'm going with stainless steel bolsters with a high polish and Scale made of mother of pearl.
with it's shape, and the fittings it should be a real eye catcher.
