Named for my Wife whose middle name, Lai Won, means "pretty clouds". It was a gift for her and took 18 months to make. The Mother of Pearl used for Scales was given to me by her Father, Henry, who captured the Abalone in California, South of HalfMoon Bay (back when it was still legal). It's important to employ the use of respiratory protection when working with Mother of Pearl. Even with a mask on it smells strongly like a serious visit to the Dentist when it's being ground on the wheel. It smells like teeth being ground to dust.

The Ninth Knife of my apprenticeship to KnifeMaker, Larry Detloff of Santa Cruz, California.

Blade length: 2.5"
Overall length (open): 6"

Damascus Steel folded by Mike Norris.

Blade: Stainless Vortex Damascus
Scale: Mother of Pearl
Liners: Titanium
Bolsters: 440c Stainless Steel

Well-deserved DD on this one for sure. Absolutely incredible - especially the story behind it.

I learned from this guy!

Detloff's been making knives for longer than I've been alive, & I'm 37.

Thanks.
Still, I have a long way to go to achieve the degree of refinement Detloff has.
I feel like it's easier to notice when you actually hold the knives.
I'm glad you like my designs though.

It's hand-made works of sharp beauty like this that prove knives are not just cutlery for a kitchen or weapons for a thug; they're artistic crafts. That said, this is an amazing piece of work. First time I've heard a knife maker actually make the scales from scratch rather than just purchasing them and to have them be from abalone is just... lack of a better word, badass. Your rivets are somewhat conspicuous, but the Damascus finish, bolster polish and the sheer allure of the scales really overshadows any small unavoidable technicality of the knife. Overall, wonderful work you have here and I'm putting your name in my knife artist list. On an arbitrary note, I'm attending college at Santa Cruz. Small world.

Well said.  I'm grateful that people seem to appreciate the abalone shell situation, it's kind of a bear to work with.  And the point you make about the screw heads is a very good one.  I'll sometimes file patterns into the heads of fled head screws but I'm such a sucker for the convenience of hex heads, even though they look a little "low" artistically.  I should probably just go with custom screws by default unless the overall design is super industrial feeling.  Hmm...

I hope that school's going well for you, it's a beautiful campus.  Are you finding your studies compelling?
Thanks again for your in-depth feedback.
