The steel is folded by the Smith, then after it's ground and heat-treated, it is etched in acid and the higher carbon areas get darker. :)

wow so that is the way to never thought about that XD

wel i may call my self a smith to only not in knifes swords shields or plate steel armor or other plate steel craft items...But ChainMail started becuase i was qurios when playing oblivion a game now there is a new one out Skyrim Yay. but when playing oblivion i was wearing a iron chainmail and later a mithril and i was wondering how they get crafted so looked at school at the pc and found close up photo of chainmail 4in1 and emadiatly i was able to make that one and not that long ago someone told me about 6in1 so i tryed that one and that one is now my fav weave or how you want to call it

but i hope one day to smith (old way) a blade (sword) but i don't think i wil ever get that opertunity becuase i dont know any smiths that make weapons and armor here in netherland >_< SAD ME

I loved Skyrim and Oblivion. It's cool that it inspired you to actually learn how to build chain mail!

I was lucky to have a friend who offered to teach me how to make folding knives. We don't actually use a forge though so I'm really not a Smith in the traditional way. We design custom folders, hand grind all the little mechanical parts and blades, then heat-treat everything in a kiln for hardening. We get our steel in billets from some incredible blacksmiths who are the ones who fold it.

I hope that you can find some guidance in the blade-making arena. It sounds like you are pretty resourceful so keep on looking and I wish you the best of luck! ^_^
