',', The Phoenix ,',' by HundredHands ',', The Phoenix ,',' by HundredHands
I was in a terrible accident last year. My wife and I were riding bikes when a car came at us and took me out. She dodged it thank goodness. I took a bunch of damage to my right leg and lost lots of blood. Lots of surgery followed. The last 13 months have been consumed by physical therapy so now I can stand again, bend my leg and even walk. My wife and I used to run marathons and stuff, now I can barely run a mile but even that's like a miracle. Still have a long way to go but it's amazing what you can come back from.
I got my hands on some sweet Mike Norris Damascus and made this thing during the earlier stages of my recovery. I'm calling it The Phoenix.

Blade length: 4.6"
Overall length: 10.5"

Damascus folded by Mike Norris www.4gwz.com/knifemakers/id49.…

Blade: Stainless Damascus
Bolster: 440 stainless steel
Liners: Titanium
Scale: Stabilized Buckeye

That's some awesome blade geometry. It has an elven vibe to it and I like it! Damascus is generally too ornate for my taste, but it suits this blade perfectly.

Awesome artwork! The Phoenix is one of the coolest designs of a knife I've seen in a long time.

Thank you very much, it was tricky on account of it actually being quite small.

Try searching "Damascus Folding knives".
That oughtta bring you into an array of paths that could lead you to a sweet folding knife made from decent materials that suits your price needs. Good luck to you out there!

Dang. The closest that I found to this style is "Haddock Folding Knife".
It almost seems like you are one of the few to do that style of knife...

Benchmade makes one called the "Rift" with sorta similar blade geometry (sometimes called a "reverse tanto" style). It's a beautiful knife, I'd happily wear a Rift as my daily carry.
but,
I never saw anything slim like the Phoenix.
I wanted its lines to be slender and elegant, probably not as practical as the Rift or that Haddock, but I thought it would be beautiful if I could pull it off. Fitting the lock-mechanic into a space this small was a BITCH. ^_^

it worked what ever you did, ive never seen a flip knife that was curved like that, and the damascus steel just makes it that much more visually impressive

They say things happen for a reason, it looks like that accident has allowed you to develope what seems a considerable talent for making beautifull knives. Your designs are on par with master makers, and judging from the pictures your finish is of an extremely high standard too.

Hope 2013 finds you even further recovered - all my best.

Many thanks for your support and kind words.
I believe that you're correct. Funny thing about accidents like that, they have a way of improving a person's perspective.
I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to make knives.
I'm lucky to be here at all.

Take care and enjoy this New Year!
Thanks again,

absolutely fantastic! +Fave! :D

I am sorry to hear about your accident though. I hope you are on the mend and
things go much better for you. Noone who can create artistry like this deserves
to suffer so horrendous an accident. Good luck and keep up the brilliant work.

Thanks tons.
It took me a while to be able to make a knife like this. The locking mechanic is fit into a very small space, which was a serious challenge.
My leg is working a lot better but it still hurts all time.
It's okay. Life is supposed to be hard sometimes, it helps us appreciate the good stuff, like friends and family and stuff.

This is an amazing piece of work, and the story behind it makes it even more meaningful. I'd love to buy a knife like this from you. I'd probably never use it though, just put it on display or something. How did you learn to make knives?

I've been working with my buddy whose been making knives since the late 70's. I started at the turn of the century.

Some people do use them for gentle tasks but many collectors will just display this sort of custom folder. Right now I just gift them to elders but I hope to make some for sale someday soon. ^_^

I'd love to learn the skill myself. It'd come in very handy, I think. I'll have to investigate if there are any knife or tool makers in my local area who are willing to teach.

Once you start selling them, tell us! I'd be extremely interested in buying one of your pieces.

My word, this is gorgeous. And my word, what a thing to survive! I hope your path forward is full of improvement and as little pain as possible, and I'm very glad you're still around. I know I haven't exchanged very many words with you, but your knives are beautiful and your art is always nifty.

Thanks a lot for your warm words of support! Trauma is a funny thing, if you can manage to survive then I think it can improve you even though its a pain in the rear-end. I'm glad you like the knives and stuff, they're fun to make.

I hope you are well!
Enjoy your day!
